Success Story of Mrs.Dipika Deshmukh ji like a movie! housewife turns businesswoman; inspires hundreds of others Telhara (Akola, Maharashtra) : In some communities of Maharashtra, it is still considered a shame if woman of the house comes outside the house, let alone doing a job. Dipika Deshmukh was from a family with same mentality. However, when her husband got severely ill, and father-in-law get caught in an accident; she chose to break all those rules and stereotypes. Despite the taunts of relatives and villagers, Dipika managed to run a bicycle shop on her own; and now she is a successful businesswoman as well. Her story is not only like a movie, but also an inspiration to hundreds of other women.

Breaking the barrier..

Dipika was married to Prakash Deshmukh in 2002. They were a happy couple with two kids. But Dipika’s world turned upside down when Rakesh was diagnosed with a serious disease. He wasn’t even able to get off the bed due to his sickness. After that, his Father started looking after their cycle shop. Unfortunately, he too met with an accident, and the shop was closed again. With no breadwinner in house; Dipika decided to take the responsibility of the shop. However, the very first obstacle was her own family. As an orthodox family, nobody liked Dipika’s idea. But as the money was needed, not only to run the house, but also for the treatment of Father-Son, they later agreed and allowed her to work.

Earning and Learning too!

There were two workers at the shop. Yet, Dipika learned to repair cycle, punctured tyre and making spare parts. She had studied till 10th class only. Hence many customers used to cheat her. Hence, she decided to learn English and Maths from her daughter. Later on, she also passed 12th board exams; and now she has taken admission for Bachelor’s degree in Art.

Business started with an idea..

When she used to get free time in shop; she used to make Papad. She then used to sell them to the customers visiting the shop. One day, she made some jewellery by watching a DYI video on Youtube. One of her customer loved it! He gave an order for the jewellery. This gave her the confidence to start and run a business. She then started making jewellery for women in town, on the occasions of various festivals like Sankranti, Baby Shower etc. She even started a Home industry named ‘Suryodaya’ for the same. Women in Telhara were now organised under the Suryodaya. They were free to do anything they like. Some of them made Papad, some made other snacks, some made Instant Dhokla batter, Idly-Dosa flour, Ornaments made of sweets, thread jewellery etc. They were also getting orders from other villages or even districts. Dipika made sure that the woman whose husband were alcoholic, will get job. So that they can be financially independent. This helped hundreds of women in their tehsil. Watching all this, the resistance she faced from her own house was also subsided.

Coronavirus Lockdown? Not problem, but opportunity!

During coronavirus Lockdown, when most of the MSMEs were shut down; Dipika’s Suryodaya was also facing difficulties. But, her visionary leadership helped it not only to survive, but also to make profit!
She noticed that the demand for masks is going to increase in future; and started making them with help of women in her town. During the last year’s lockdown, they sold more than one lakh masks!

With the migrant workers leaving state, there were no ‘Pani-puri’ sellers in village. Noticing that, she also started selling pani-puri with maintaining social distancing and following covid norms. They sold around 10 thousand pani-puris during the lockdown.

Is it all? Nope! Picture abhibaakihai.. Dipika also had hobby of making idols (sculptures). She had made an idol of godessTulja Bhavani for a competition. The picture of her idol went viral on the social media and whatsapp. It was also noticed by Sakal Media Group. They recieved an order to make 500 Ganesha idols. They made the idols with soil, making them eco-friendly. Not only that, they also mixed seeds of ‘Tulsi’ in it. Making them double-beneficial. This idea was a superhit! They now have received an order for 10 thousand idols!
